The pictures depict a frame manufactured by us in the old flemish style. The prototypes of this flemish variation were popular in the 17th century in Holland: sleek and streamlined, ebonyveneered frames, with varying degrees of stepping on the inner or outer borders.
German and Alpine framemakers developed variations of this basic form during the second half of the 17th century, creating frames with repetitive stepping interrupted by flat areas. These flat zones were then decorated with mouldings typically exhibiting a flame or wave motif, which became an ornamental defining characteristic of these frames. This type of moulding, also known as ?ripple mouldings? was originally used as a decorative element in cabinetry, particularly popular in 16th century Antwerp.

Variations in the combinations of stepping and mouldings yielded an interesting diversity in the appearance of these picture frames. The influences mentioned above allowed the development of the current type of Flemish frames, which is, like its simpler prototypes, usually referred to as the ?Dutch Frame?. Ostentatious showpieces of this type of work, such as that depicted often reached frieze sizes of up to 30 cm!
Typical, aside from the remarkable contour of the frames, is the black colour, which was relieved only by limited areas of gilding. Inexpensive carrier woods were veneered with expensive ebony for frames produced during the the 17th century. .

The exorbitant price of ebony precipitated a change in the selection of mateials used in production of these frames and since then, craftsmen, including our won, use only very finely- pored woods, such as pearwood. Only woods in perfect condition and of the highest quality are suitable for the complex craftsmanship these intricately detailed frames require.
The frames are available in custom sizes and designs.
